Short-haired cat · someone in the house is allergic
Short-haired cat hair and someone is allergic (the pet sleeps in their bedroom)
Coats like this: Domestic Shorthair, Tabby, British Shorthair, Siamese, Bengal, Burmese, Russian Blue, Scottish Fold, Abyssinian, Devon Rex, Moggy. Short-haired cats shed fine, light hairs that cling to fabric and clothes.
The allergen is in saliva and skin flakes, carried on hair but not the same thing as hair. A room can look clean and still carry plenty of it, and the bedroom is where the allergic person spends eight hours breathing it.
From tonight, the cat stays out of the allergic person's bedroom, door closed. Wash their bedding in hot water this week. Some people notice a difference within a few weeks; some don't, and that's useful to know too.
What you can stop doing
- Treating this as a hair problem. Removing visible hair may help a little; it isn't the fix.
- Extra floor cleaning in the meantime. Soft surfaces and the bedroom are the better places to spend the effort.
What comes next
- If the bedroom can't be closed off: a HEPA purifier in the bedroom overnight is worth trying, and the cat stays off the bed itself. Evidence for air cleaners is mixed; some households find they help, others see little change.
- Comb the cat away from the allergic person — outside, or in a room they don't use — and have someone else do it where possible.
- Washing the pet's own bedding in hot water weekly is a better use of time than wiping surfaces.
- See a doctor or allergist for the person. Reducing exposure is the sensible first step, but allergy bodies are frank that many home measures have limited evidence, and none of this is treatment or a diagnosis.

This plan is about exposure. It doesn't treat the allergy, and symptoms that stay bad need a doctor.
If the shedding has suddenly got much heavier, or there are bald patches, red skin or a lot of scratching, that's a vet visit first, not a cleaning plan.
