The Fur Plan

Wiry coat · someone in the house is allergic

Wiry-coated dog hair and someone is allergic (their bedroom is already pet-free)

Coats like this: Schnauzer, West Highland Terrier, Scottish Terrier, Airedale, Border Terrier. Wiry coats shed coarse short hairs that are easy to pick up.

Change this first
Allergy isn't about how much hair you can see. Start with the bedroom, not the vacuum.
Why

The allergen is in skin flakes and saliva, carried on hair but not the same thing as hair. A room can look clean and still carry plenty of it, and the bedroom is where the allergic person spends eight hours breathing it.

Today

The bedroom is already pet-free, which is the big one. Next: keep soft furnishings in the dog's main room to a minimum, and wash whatever they lie on in hot water weekly. If symptoms are still bad, that's a conversation with a doctor or allergist, not more cleaning.

What you can stop doing

  • Treating this as a hair problem. Removing visible hair may help a little; it isn't the fix.
  • Extra floor cleaning in the meantime. Soft surfaces and the bedroom are the better places to spend the effort.
What comes next
  • Brush the dog away from the allergic person — outside, or in a room they don't use — and have someone else do it where possible.
  • Washing the pet's own bedding in hot water weekly is a better use of time than wiping surfaces.
  • See a doctor or allergist for the person. Reducing exposure is the sensible first step, but allergy bodies are frank that many home measures have limited evidence, and none of this is treatment or a diagnosis.
Only if you decide to buy something
A HEPA air purifier, if you want to try oneTrue HEPA, sized for the bedroom, run continuously. Expect maybe-helps, not a cure.
A vacuum with a sealed HEPA filter, when you next replace oneWithout a sealed system, fine particles go back into the air behind you.

This plan is about exposure. It doesn't treat the allergy, and symptoms that stay bad need a doctor.

If the shedding has suddenly got much heavier, or there are bald patches, red skin or a lot of scratching, that's a vet visit first, not a cleaning plan.
